The Meaning of Communication
Communication is basic to social (1) and to group life. As the socialogist uses this word, it means the interchange of thoughts, opinion, feelings and (2). This may be done through speech, writing and (3), and also through other forms of expression, such as art, music and dancing. Using these resources of (4), man makes his needs, feelings, and thoughts known and understood. He can also learn what other people want and how they feel and think. Without communication there could be no organized collective life. In simple societies, communication is almost always (5). In the modern world communication can no longer remain a matter of face-to-face contacts. Much of it becomes (6), transmitted by impersonal (7) to a large audience, whose members are generally unknown to the originators of the communication. In other words, it becomes (8) communication.
The term mass communication is used in two senses. In the first place, it may refer to the (9) — that is, to the mechanical devices used to (10) ans (11) message from the sender to the receivers. Newspapers, books, (12), (13) as well as the telephone are the chief forms we employ for this nowdays. In the second sense, mass communication refers to the message itself, specifically to a message which reaches large numbers of people.
So the mass media are rapidly becoming the chief source of communication throughout the world.
